GRAND REOPENING OF THE SHAWSHEEN RIVER

The Shawsheen River has been closed for more than 50 years due to abuse, neglect, illegal dumping, and improper wastewater disposal. In was replaced by a series of long, shallow, stagnant, and stinky swamps. Gone were the trout and salmon, replaced by crappies and suckers. Gone were the herons, kingfishers, and otters.

For the past 30 years, people in a variety of volunteer organizations, working in conjunction with government agencies at the local, state, and federal level, have been cleaning the Shawsheen and restoring the riparian ecosystem. It has been a long, difficult, and rewarding task. We know full well that the river and its watershed will never return to its pristine state. We know full well that constant vigilance will be required to address future degradation. Nevertheless, the Shawsheen River Watershed Association is proud to announce:

THE SHAWSHEEN RIVER IS BACK!

THE SHAWSHEEN RIVER. FLOWING SOON IN A NEIGHBORHOOD NEAR YOU!
