June 3rd 2000 cleanup in Andover yields few volunteers, much trash
Advertisement for the June 3rd cleanup at Washington Park was begun at the May SRWA meeting, appeared on the website in early May, and for two weeks prior to that Saturday it appeared in the Andover Townsmen. At the cleanup was Bob Rauseo of Tewksbury, president of SRWA and founding member and the spirit behind SWEAT, kneeling in 2 foot deep cold water, digging shopping carts out of the riverbed.Ken Doran of Lawrence, founding member of SWEAT, and probably the main person to deal with any treefall along the entire river, who was responsible for contacting Dan Tremblay of the Andover Board of Health, who came down and filmed the whole cleanup to be broadcast on his nationally syndicated TV show.Bill Especiale of Bedford, treasurer of SRWA. Bob Katz of North Andover, advocacy officer of SRWA.John Hicks-Courant, founding member of SWEAT and underwater retreival specialist,( yes, a frogman), from Billerica, who arranged for the dumpsters we filled to be dropped off, and later picked up and taken away. Oh, and myself,( Kingston NH). One volunteer showed up, nice guy, not sure if he was from Andover, I assume he was, with a 4 or 5 year old boy. I guess what I'm trying to get across is we need some strong support from Andover, and we don't have it.We need registered town voters to oppose projects like PMS (Powder Mill Square), and to stir up interest from the cons com, the board of health and the planning board. We know the river is more than a storm drain , but apparently, they don't.There are many threats to the river in Andover by buisness's along the river, dams, Reichold Chemical, and new building. The river needs a voice in Andover, or at least more people to support those who do speak for it.. |
