History
Descriptions of walking tours of the Academy and nearby School Street are available from the Andover Historical Society.

The Academy was founded in l778 to instruct young men in "the great end and real business of living" by promoting "true piety and virtue."

It is now a co-educational day and boarding school for about 1100 students from throughout the United States and over 50 foreign countries.

Purdon Reservation was donated to AVIS by Susanne Smith Purdon.

In 1843, Purdon Reservation's natural amphitheater was the site of a speech by Daniel Webster.

To an audience of thousands, Webster spoke eloquently of his reunification with the Whig party and the upcoming presidential election.

Lupine Reservation has a plaque near the remaining piers of the Andover Canoe Club, circa 1910 (see Pomps Pond description, in History on Shawsheen/Vale Reservation page).

Natural features
The Academy's pine woodlands along Rte. 125, surrounded by wetlands, are home to pheasants, occasional foxes, and a large stand of lady slippers.

In May, colorful cherry and apple trees bloom throughout the campus.

Lupine Reservation offers fishing spots along the Shawsheen River.

Bay Circuit route
From Ward Reservation the trail crosses Rte. 125 and parallels the highway in a pine plantation for 0.25 mile.

Enter Phillips Academy property through tall pines to a woods road.

Follow the road left to a small field; cross to a driveway giving access through an iron gate to Salem St.

Turn right to the road junction and then go left onto Holt Rd.

Shortly the trail enters the woods on the right next to a chain-link fence.

Cross the athletic field parallel to the track.

Continue toward Main St. along the driveway, through a wrought iron gate, then bear right.

Follow Main St. to the corner of Phillips St.

The Bay Circuit continues along Phillips St., crossing Abbot and Central Sts. to reach Purdon Reservation.

Follow the trail through Purdon to Lupine Rd.

This section of the Bay Circuit Trail is 2 miles long.

To continue on the Bay Circuit Trail to Indian Ridge Reservation, turn left for 0.2 mile along Lupine Rd., turn right on Central St, go under the train bridge and continue straight 0.2 mile to the Reservation entrance.
